On behalf of the International Advisory Board of UNESCO/UNITWIN Interregional Network on PhD Education and Research in Biophysics, Biotechnology and Environmental Health, I would like to cordially invite you all to participate in the second workshop/ conference (Virtual) of the UNESCO/UNITWIN NETWORK. This will be hosted by BLDE (Deemed to be University) in Vijayapura, India during August 6 & 7, 2020 to explore 'Current concepts of Environmental pollution by Electromagnetic field and Corona Virus'.

The technical progress-induced exponential increase of electromagnetic fields (EMF) emitted from the technology and its role in the increase of the risk of generating different diseases, including virus infection, are vital problems of Public Health. Although the non-thermal biological effects of EMF, which are realized through the quantum-mechanical membrane sensors having non-linear dose-dependent effects, are well-documented facts, the ICNIRP guidelines for radiofrequency of electromagnetic fields exposure are only based on its thermal effects and completely neglect the non-thermal ones. However, it is known that mobile phone radiation impacts the cells even when it is below the safety limits. Such non-adequate dosimetry of EMF from the point of public health is due to the absence of a quantum-sensitive biomarker reflecting the functional state of cells and serving as a gate through which the weak intensity signals modulate the semipermeable properties of the cell membrane, the dysfunction of which is a consequence of cell pathology. At present, they are an abundance of literature data on metabolic control of cell hydration, which could serve as a quantum-mechanically sensitive universal diagnostic parameter reflecting the functional state of cells, the dysfunction of which decreases the barrier function of the membrane for penetration of foreign particles, such as viruses into the cells. It has been shown that EMF could modulate the metabolic driving water efflux from the cells controlling cell hydration and the semipermeable properties of the cell membrane through soluble guanylate cyclase and G proteins in the membrane. Thus, the metabolic control of cell hydration has been suggested as a biomarker for determining the hazardous and beneficial effects of EMF with different frequencies and intensities. At present, there is a big dispute regarding the health effect of new 5G technology system on physicochemical properties of the water solution and metabolic control of cell hydration. In contrast to the previous 4G radiation, 5G radiation does not penetrate the human body. It is known that the MW effect is realized through the generation of free radicals in skin water. Therefore, to estimate health effects of MW from the point of public health the free radical formed in skin tissues can be used as a biomarker, considering that skin tissue plays a key role in the immunological reaction of organisms for which further investigation is needed.

Although the efforts of life scientists' societies in the world are being mobilized for fighting against SARS CoV-2 pandemic, the coronavirus infection is widely spreading and we still do not know the mechanism of virus penetration into the cell after the immunological reaction of the organism is generated. Despite the clinical use of antimalarial drugs, such as hydroxyl- chloroquine for fighting against coronavirus, the mechanism of action of this drug is still emerging because of the absence of a precise mechanism through which their antivirus effects are realized. The fact that these drugs have therapeutic effects on different diseases, including its antitumor effects, indicates that there is a common cellular mechanism, the activation of which has therapeutic effects on the organism. The vagueness of the nature of the target mechanism through which the antivirus effect on the organism is realized makes it impossible to study the dose-response relationship of these drugs for finding out the minimum dose needed for the clinical efficacy and the doses that are toxic dose challenges to clinical practice. It is obvious that the evaluation of the nature of the cellular target sensitive to the lowest doses of these drugs could make it possible to find out a rational way to increase the resistance of the organism to virus infection. As the metabolically driven water efflux controls low permeability for foreign particles such as the virus, the metabolic control of cell hydration can be used as a biomarker for estimation of the therapeutic potential of physical and chemical factors on the cells. As the metabolic control of cell hydration is a target for the biological effect of different EMFs, it is obvious that there exists a correlation between the environmental pollution by EMF and the virus infection, including coronaviruses. Therefore, the study of beneficial and hazardous effects of MW on the metabolic control of cell hydration in different environmental mediums would make it possible to characterize 5G system from the point of public health including its possible effect on Covid-19 pandemic. Because the biological impacts of major physical and chemical components of environmental mediums on cells and organisms have non-linear dose-dependent character, the fundamental knowledge in biophysics of biological effects of weak signals is necessary to solve modern problems of environmental health control.

Therefore, the subject of this present seminar is dedicated to improving the postgraduate educational courses in Biophysics making it adequate to address the demands of environmental health control including the EMF effects on coronavirus infection through the cell membrane. This subject will elaborate on a “Joint Research Project” based on which the experimental work of the thesis of PhD students will be implemented.
